Global Neurosurgery Section Introduction—Neurosurgery’s “Moon Shot”

By FIENS Executive Board Member; Dr. Gail Rosseau

With this issue, Neurosurgery introduces a new section devoted to Global Neurosurgery. This may be one of the most important steps ever taken by a neurosurgical journal, and I am deeply grateful to Editor-in-Chief, Douglas Kondziolka, for advancing this initiative. For this is the first time a major journal has taken such a deliberate step to address Global Neurosurgery, most commonly defined as “the clinical and public health practice of neurosurgery with the primary purpose of ensuring timely, safe and affordable neurosurgical care to all who need it.” This first step for our specialty is particularly important because global neurosurgery has already established itself as a leader among the surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anesthesia (SOTA) specialties that are driving global progress. Surgery must become an “indivisible, indispensable part of public health,” and neurosurgery is leading the way.
