Fellowships are an integral part of the FIENS mission. With our in-country training and international traveling fellowships, we continue to advance neurosurgical education and training in low-and-middle-income countries one fellow at a time.
Thanks to the generosity of the Clack and Bassett families, and the countless sponsors, hosts and hospitals who donate their teaching, their training facilities, their time, their energy and their hearts, we continue to grow our alumni fellowship community and we continue to hear stories of development and growth in our over 16+ supported countries.

Bassett Fellowship
The Bassett Fellowship began in 2014 when Mr. Bassett joined FIENS as a community board member. Mr. Bassett’s motivation behind the fellowship stemmed from his belief that all patients throughout the world should have access to first-rate neurosurgery care and that the best way to accomplish that was through first-rate training for neurosurgeons in developing countries. Since its inception, the fellowship has enabled over 20 neurosurgeons in 12 different countries to participate in three month training periods in North America.

Clack Family Fellowship
The FIENS/Clack Family Fellowship supports two trainees in developing countries to finish their neurosurgical training in their home country. The fellowship was started by the Clack family in 2019 to advance the lives of the sometimes forgotten minority. As parents of a disabled child, their vision was to create a foundation that supported and advocated for those that may be left behind. The Clack’s foundation supports research for various diseases, activity center development, funding for service dogs for people with various disabilities, and funding for neurosurgical education. To date, the FIENS/Clack Family Fellowship has supported 6 neurosurgeons in completing their neurosurgical training in South Africa, Uganda, Abidjan- Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya.
