Today, the Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery community honors the life and legacy of Dr. Merwyn Bagan, a neurosurgeon whose dedication to global education and service helped shape FIENS and the field of international neurosurgery. Dr. Bagan served as Chairman of FIENS from 2004 to 2013, guiding the organization’s efforts to expand neurosurgical training and mentorship in regions where specialists are scarce. His leadership reflected a lifelong commitment to ensuring that neurosurgeons around the world could access the training and resources needed to care for their communities.
Dr. Bagan’s work extended far beyond leadership roles. In the mid-1990s, he and his wife Carol moved to Kathmandu, Nepal, where he helped establish a neurosurgical ward and training program at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, helping build the foundation of Nepal’s modern neurosurgical workforce. Together, they also coordinated the distribution of more than $4 million in donated surgical supplies to neurosurgical centers across the developing world. His legacy lives on through the surgeons trained, the patients cared for, and the global community he helped build. FIENS Board Member Gail Rosseau reflected, “Merwyn is one of our best examples of how one person can make a profound difference in the world.”
FIENS Board Chair Robert Dempsey reflected on Dr. Bagan’s impact: “He was beloved by many and an inspiration to all. I have had the privilege of serving the FIENS organization that he has so well led for many years and had the opportunity to be mentored by him. We all loved his intelligence, his compassion, and his knowing smile.”
The FIENS community extends its deepest gratitude for Dr. Bagan’s extraordinary service, leadership, and generosity of spirit. His work strengthened neurosurgical education across continents and inspired generations of physicians committed to advancing care where it is needed most. We honor his memory with profound respect and appreciation, and we remain committed to carrying forward the mission and values he so passionately championed.
