Advancing skills in neurosurgical care at
Yavapai Regional Medical Center
Name: Dr. Seare Halefom Kahsay
Home Country: Ethiopia
Sponsor: Dr. Sam Safavi-Abbasi
Fellowship Training Hospital: Yavapai Regional Medical Center
Fellowship Overview: Dr. Seare trained and completed his residency in Ethiopia at Addis Ababa University Department of Surgery. For his fellowship he traveled to The Spine Center and Neurosurgery at Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC), for his fellowship from May 2024 to July 2024. He was hosted by Dr. Sam Safavi-Abbasi, Director of Neurosurgery at YRMC.
During his fellowship he was able to observe advanced neurosurgical care with Dr. Safavi and his team which included the utilization of neuronavigation technology, minimally invasive techniques, and meticulous surgical skills. He was able to observe and learn from hundreds of spine and brain surgeries.
Outside of the operation room, he shadowed Dr. Safavi in his neurosurgery outpatient clinic where he learned about a patient-centered approach and was involved in scientific discussions regarding management and surgical plans. He was also able to participate in an ongoing chronic back pain management program.
During his fellowship, Dr. Seare had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Safavi on scientific papers he hopes to publish in the future.
“I am hopeful that the experience I gained from this fellowship will help me refine my surgical skills. I am hoping to transfer the skills I gained from the fellowship to Ethiopia and improve the quality of care for my patients.”
When asked what his future plans were regarding a new neurosurgical site and creating infrastructure in Ethiopia, Dr. Seare responded:
My short term plan is to develop an ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) program where patients’ postoperative stay in hospital is minimized. He learned about this program during his fellowship. My long term plan is to establish a new neurosurgical center equipped with the latest neurosurgical tools one day.
In closing Dr. Seare wished to acknowledge and thank those that supported his FIENS-Basset Fellowship journey.
I would like to thank FIENS for giving me this golden opportunity and generously funding my expenses. It surely has changed my perspective.
I would like to give my greatest gratitude to Dr. Sam Safavi who has been an incredible mentor and host. He was an absolutely kind host from the first day of fellowship.
I also would like to thank the entire neuroscience team at Yavapai Regional Medical Center who have made my stay great.
