FIENS is proud to present Bassett Fellow Dr. Teuku Arie Hidayat, who successfully completed his fellowship training at the Endovascular & Vascular Neurosurgery Department of Jikei University Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, from April 5 to July 5, 2025. Dr. Hidayat is a neurosurgeon from Indonesia committed to advancing stroke care, endovascular neurosurgery, and vascular neurosurgery services in his home country.
Fellowship Overview
Dr. Hidayat’s fellowship focused on Endovascular and Vascular Neurosurgery, with particular emphasis on developing expertise that can support the establishment of a stronger stroke system in Indonesia. During his training at Jikei University Hospital, he was mentored by Professor Yuichi Murayama, MD, and Gota Nagayama, MD, gaining exposure to a high-volume academic and clinical environment.
His fellowship activities included:
- Vascular neurosurgery procedures including clipping of aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy, AVM resection, and direct and indirect bypass surgery
- Monday through Friday morning reports from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
- Cath lab endovascular training for both elective and emergency stroke cases
- Exposure to thrombectomy procedures
- Treatment of ruptured and unruptured aneurysms through coiling and flow diverters
- Carotid artery stenting
- AVF and AVM embolization

Impact in Indonesia
Dr. Hidayat shared that this fellowship will directly support the Indonesian government’s objective of establishing stroke systems in remote areas, particularly in Lombok. With the knowledge and skills gained during this training, he believes his team can now move forward in building a coordinated code stroke team as well as endovascular and vascular neurosurgery services in his region.
He also noted that these efforts are already underway. In Indonesia, his team is currently organizing a stroke program that includes training for doctors, courses for nurses, and the development of supporting infrastructure such as cath lab and angiosuite facilities. These advancements are expected to strengthen the healthcare system and improve outcomes for patients requiring urgent stroke and cerebrovascular care.

Challenges and Growth
One of the main challenges Dr. Hidayat encountered during the fellowship was the language barrier, as not all members of the local team were fluent in English. Despite this, he successfully completed the program and gained valuable technical and systems-level knowledge that will be instrumental in his work back home.
Future Plans
Dr. Hidayat expressed his sincere gratitude to the FIENS Board for providing what he described as an extraordinary opportunity. He emphasized that the impact of this fellowship will extend far beyond his individual training, helping improve care for many patients and aligning closely with national healthcare priorities in Indonesia.
Congratulations to Dr. Hidayat!
