Fellowship Overview:

Dr. Ahmed Omar, Consultant of Neurosurgery from Egypt, was awarded the FIENS Bassett Fellowship, completing his training at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under the mentorship of Dr. Amgad Hanna.

His fellowship focused on developing expertise in nerve surgery and microsurgery. Dr. Omar participated in a wide range of learning activities, including cadaveric dissections, microsurgical laboratory training, experimental rat surgeries, and research work. This hands-on and academic training strengthened his clinical skills, particularly in nerve repair and brachial plexus surgery.

Upon returning home, Dr. Omar pioneered nerve and brachial plexus surgery in Egypt, establishing the first dedicated nerve surgery center at his institution. He has also been actively involved in training colleagues and organizing workshops to disseminate the specialized knowledge he gained during his fellowship.

Dr. Omar expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Amgad Hanna for his mentorship and to Mr. Abdullah Keles, the laboratory manager, for his invaluable support.

He described the FIENS Fellowship as a “great program and amazing opportunity” and looks forward to continuing to expand nerve surgery services and training in Egypt.
